One of the rooms in a flat becomes vacant and must be let to a new tenant. The conventional Nico, who has made his pile, has no choice but to choose the eccentric and intangible Ansgar Boos to become his new flat mate, for want of anyone better. Ansgar’s escapades and smoke screens feed Nico’s desire to understand this bird of paradise, which leads him to places and people he would otherwise never encounter.

In Ansgar Boos, published in the short story collection Das Licht der Flammen auf unseren Gesichtern (2013), the German author Dorian Steinhoff writes with tons of human insight, using a steady and felicitous style, which subtly and indefinably builds tension. He manages to maintain this refined style throughout each and every story in this variegated collection.
